Staff Motivation & Engagement
DeskActive has long understood the importance and challenge of engaging and motivating staff to bring about lasting behavioural change. In fact research shows that engagement is the most critical challenge facing the remote delivery of office health, safety & environment (HSE) services.
With this in mind, DeskActive has been designed from the ground up with a number of unique features to encourage long-term engagement, including:
- Exceptional program usability, providing staff with an intuitive, easy and fun experience.
- The highest quality 3D animations in the industry, including life-like characters, highlights on body areas of special attention, choice of male/female character and real voice prompts to assist in correct speed/timing (optional).
- A huge variety of content, both in stretch and exercise animations and health and wellbeing advice. Feedback from users has shown content variety to be imperative to long-term motivation.
- Weekly performance metrics and progress indicators, giving users a sense of achievement and progress over time.
- The 'personal trainer' effect of having a health & safety team monitor progress remotely (optional). See details at right.
- Content bonuses, where staff are rewarded for pause break completion with a favourite web page upon completion of a session, e.g. a news item, weather/sports report, joke, quote or comic (optional).
DeskActive Competitions (optional)
DeskActive encourages friendly competition between staff.
- Staff can compare their usage with best/worst/average for their group/organisation.
- Organisations and health & safety teams can run competitions between individuals and teams within the organsation.
This works in a similar way to the ‘10,000 Steps’ or ‘Global Corporate Challenge’ approach which builds motivation through teamwork.

The Personal Trainer Effect
When a person purchases a gym membership, they typically attend the gym only 3-4 times and then never return. By comparison, a person who signs up for a personal trainer or team sport has an 80%+ chance of attending regularly over an extended time frame.
Clearly the involvement of other people who expect or implicitly demand your participation is a key to motivation - ‘my team (or trainer) is expecting me to participate’.
DeskActive similarly improves motivation through the 'personal trainer' effect. This is achieved by staff sharing their progress with your health & safety team, receiving progress messages from their health & safety team member, and having their program adjusted as staff progress. The health & safety become the remote personal trainer for the staff member.
